MAY 2026 ZOOM PAINT-ALONG

An Expressive Approach to Soft Pastel with Richard Suckling

Saturday, May 23, 2026 · 9:00 AM–12:00 PM MT

This paint-along features UK-based artist Richard Suckling, who will demonstrate an expressive approach to working with soft pastel and mixed media.

Participants will work from two subjects—a garden and a coastal scene—using reference photos as a starting point. Richard emphasizes using reference as a springboard for ideas, encouraging a more interpretive and expressive approach rather than strict replication.

Participants will work on sanded or velour surfaces using soft pastels, with the optional use of alcohol and gouache as part of the process. The session is open to all levels.

Richard Suckling lives in the fishing village of Newlyn in the west of Cornwall in the UK. Originally trained as an illustrator, he now works primarily in soft pastel and mixed media. He exhibits in galleries across the UK and Europe and teaches workshops in the UK, France, and online. His work has been featured in publications including Plein Air Magazine, Pastel Journal, Practique Des Arts, Pastel World, and The Artist Magazine.
