Suzanne Burnell
Suzanne Burnell is a Canadian-born, Colorado-based artist whose landscape paintings in pastel, oil, and mixed media reflect a lifelong connection to wild places.
Working primarily en plein air, she brings a sensitive, observant eye to the fleeting qualities of light, atmosphere, and form—an approach enriched by her scientific background.
Chilly summer months spent camping and mapping the geology of the Canadian Arctic first sparked her fascination with remote and rugged landscapes. Early artistic influences such as Canada’s renowned Group of Seven deepened her appreciation for expressive interpretations of the natural world.
Today, Suzanne aims to create a sense of space and calm in an increasingly busy and distracted world.
Suzanne’s formal art education includes training at a traditional atelier as well as numerous intensive workshops with nationally recognized artists, experiences that have strengthened both her technical foundation and creative range.
An award-winning artist, Suzanne’s work has been recognized in juried exhibitions across the Western United States. Her recent honors include:
2025: Plein Air Artists’ Colorado, 28th Annual National Juried Fine Art Exhibition – First Place
2025: Estes Valley Plein Air Festival – Honorable Mention
2024: Estes Valley Plein Air Festival – Board of Directors Award
2023: Pastel Artists of Oregon Membership Exhibition – “Artist to Artist” Award
2022: Whidbey Plein Air Paint Out – Honorable Mention
Suzanne is an active member of the Pastel Society of Colorado, Plein Air Artists of Colorado (PAAC), and the Art Students League of Denver.
