January 2026 Western Slope Meeting

DATE: Saturday, January 17, 2026

TIME: 1:00 PM

LOCATION: Bray Education Center at 640 Belford Avenue in Grand Junction

DEMO ARTIST: George Callison

Grand Junction artist George Callison came to the artist’s world by way of a career in biological sciences. Vertebrate Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy trained an analytical eye, to see what nature provided. That knowledge evolved into a career in designing touring Natural History Exhibitions and Park Planning that featured robotically animated dinosaurs and other creatures . Learning to draw what he saw was inspired at Cal State Long Beach by Betty Edwards ( author of “Drawing From the Right Side of the Bain”)and a faculty colleague. George feels that painting outdoors keeps him aware of the nuances of light, shadow and color, all resulting in shapes that bring a painting to life. Painting, appreciating art and collecting it,  are wonderful ways to experience and understand the world. Although his mediums are oil and watercolor, the skill of seeing what is there, editing and recording it is much the same for a pleinaire pastelist. Callison website: georgecallison.com
